'Bamboo Rain' is Jean-Marc's first album; it was recorded in France and released in 2002. His ancestral roots lie in the East (his great-grandfather came from Mongolia)
and throughout his life he has had an afinity and a fascination with all things Eastern. It was this fascination which led him to study yoga initially whilst simultaneously honing his considerable talent for the composition and performance of Western piano music. Inevitably he wanted to combine his two loves, but he didn't just want to make a crossover album that was simply a mish-mash of styles, and neither did he want to make an album that was just a collection of Eastern-tinged piano pieces. Instead he wanted to produce something that would work both as a piece of music and also as an aid to yoga relaxation. It is hard to explain 'Bamboo Rain' further without delving into the realms of pretentious hyperbole. Because Jean-Marc is such a talented composer and performer this is not some simple collection of relaxing sounds mixed up with some sparse piano playing, and neither is it just self-indulgent self-expression. The music is well-structured and yet genuinely soothing. Jean-Marc has used it with great success in his own Hatha yoga classes, and at the same time he has included some of the pieces in his own concert repertoire. So whether you're looking for something to use as background music for yoga exercises, or whether you just need something to relax you after a stressful day at work then this is for you. The album is available, either as a CD or in downloadable form, from the shop. (You can find the shop in the menu bar at the top of the page.) |
