Eden - 'Tide'
Before there was Celtic Legend there was Eden ... Eden was the project Chris Payne formed before Celtic Legend. They were a band from Cornwall who played a variety of early music and folk instruments, but also featured rock instrumentation plus electronic sounds and modern hip hop and percussion loops. The resulting music was a mixture of traditional folk, Mediaeval music and 21st century dance with the odd heavy rock riff! The album, 'Tide', even includes a song composed in the ancient Cornish language by the Cornish language expert, Richard Gendall. Eden was the first band Chris Payne played in since his 1980s 'synth-pop' days of Gary Numan, Dramatis, Visage, Dead or Alive, etc. etc. With this band Chris made a welcome return to his Cornish and Mediaeval roots. The band actually brought together an interesting musical mixture of members: |

Janna Payne The vocalist. Janna was raised in a traditional folk music background, but she soon took her voice into another dimension by incorporating jazz in her repertoire, playing and singing in numerous bands in the Nineties. Her beautiful voice is a key part of the Eden sound. Andy Brodie Acoustic gutarist, mandolin and banjo player. Andy is a superbly-talented musician and much in demand. He played in the Rhythym Doctors and Slim and Slam, and combined his time in Eden with membership of the John Davison Trio. Chris Payne An interesting place in which to find the writer of 'Fade to Grey'! Nowadays Chris plays basically anything without a plug on it; this means instruments such as violins, crumhorns, cornamuse bombardes rauschfife and baroque recorders. Tim Vince Keyboard virtuoso. The only non Cornishman, but now made an honoury one. Tim has played in a host of bands throughout his career including Barnstormer, Fish Brothers, Kalenda Maya, Attila the Stockbroker, Chris Page (ex Horslips and Beverly Martin). Like a lot of the Coverdrive output 'Tide' was produced and engineered by the great Nigel Bates. Nigel also appeared on the recording as a special guest providing electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass chapman stick, double bass, keyboards and programming. Laura Heasman also provided some backing vocals. 'Tide' was Eden's debut album; it was recorded in the UK and France and was released in 2003. In common with many debut albums it received a lot of critical acclaim in certain quarters - and sold very few copies! Certainly some folk purists found it 'too modern' and some modern music enthusiasts found it 'too folky'. But due to the 'long tail' of the Internet it has continued to sell to people who can appreciate both, so it has found a niche - albeit not a very large one. (Still, that's partly what Coverdrive is all about ...) To keep down costs the CD was printed without a lyric book, but over the years we we have had quite a few requests for them. The lyrics for the anthemic 'Solomon Browne' (a song about the 1981 Penlee lifeboat disaster) have already been reprinted elsewhere, but you can now find them, plus others, here. Sadly 'Tide' turned out to be Eden's first and last album; the band split up soon after it was released citing the inevitable 'musical differences' - perhaps that wasn't too surprising when you consider the diverse backgrounds of the members. However the CD is worth checking out, especially if you want to see how Chris Payne got from the synthesisers of his Gary Numan period to Celtic Legend! The album is still available, either as a CD or in downloadable form, from the shop. (You can find the shop in the menu bar at the top of the page.) |
