Celtic Legend
Celtic Legend are a group of composers, writers, musicians and film-makers who were formed in 2002 by Cornish born composer Chris Payne. Chris is a clasically-trained musician and a graduate of Chichester College of Music. He has written prodigious amounts of music for TV, but he is still probably best known for being the original keyboard player for Gary Numan and for co-writing (with Midge Ure and Billy Currie) the seminal 1980s hit 'Fade to Grey'. In an attempt to get back to his roots he first formed 'Eden' and then Celtic Legend. The idea behind this project is to re-create the ancient Dark Age legends of Cornwall through recordings and videos. |

Since the start of the project Celtic Legend have produced two albums and five videos. The two albums are Tristan and Isolde (2005) and Lyonesse (2007).
Each album has a page dedicated to it where you can find out a bit about the the story, the musicians, etc. You can find the links
further down the page. The five videos are: Ysolt Y'nn Gweinten (which is Cornish for 'Isolde in the spring'), Song of Tomorrow, The Boatman, Soldier Boy and Sweet Rosemary. Actually, calling them 'videos' does them an injustice as they are all beautifully-made films. Also these films weren't made as 'traditional' videos, i.e. as simple marketing tools to try and promote record sales; instead they were deliberately made in the gap between album releases to demonstrate that Celtic Legend wasn't just a band but an artistic community. Ysolt Y'nn Gweinten for example as well as being a video recording of a song also has a narrative and features the actor Patrick Bergin (probably best known for his roles in 'Sleeping with the Enemy' with Julia Roberts and 'Patriot Games' with Harrison Ford) playing the role of Beroul the poet. All these videos are regularly broadcast on Classic FM TV. As Celtic Legend was originally a loose collective of individual talents people have come and gone. Among the original contributors were Arthur Brown (of 'Fire' fame!), Peter Sarstedt, Deirdre Shannon and Gwenno Saunders (now with The Pipettes). Indeed this collective approach has sometimes worked against us. When 'Tristan and Isolde' was first listed on Amazon it was filed under 'various artists'! Accurate in one way but misleading for people searching for a band called 'Celtic Legend'. For more information on the albums click on either the 'Tristan and Isolde' or 'Lyonesse' buttons below. If you want to buy them (or buy a DVD of the Ysolt Y'nn Gweinten video) go to the shop page. Any updates or news of further releases (such as the release of the other videos on DVD) will be posted here or in the News section of the Coverdrive home page. PS - Before there was Celtic Legend there was Eden ... |
